How to Pitch Mentality

India’s first platform for quality mental health journalism

What we are looking for

We actively seek republications in different regional language media platforms. We encourage journalists to report from the towns/cities they are based in. We especially encourage journalists from non-metro cities to send pitches.

In exceptional cases, we can consider travel funding. But, for first time pitches, please do not request travel funds.

Note: We welcome first person narratives or opinion pieces but are unable to offer payment for those at the moment.

An ideal pitch would include

  • A story and not just an issue: If you want to write about women’s mental health in Kashmir, that’s a good starting point but it is not the story. A story is if you can go into the details. Tell me that a particular district has more cases of depression than others? And, most importantly, why?
  • A main character: Would your story follow one woman (taking the earlier example forward) or multiple women? Why?
  • Expert interviews: Psychiatrists? MSF? Doctors in the district hospital? Neighbours?
  • Data, if any: Ideally an examination of official sources.
  • A note about yourself: Send us 1-2 sentences about yourself and writing samples (published pieces or blogs), if any.

Submission requirements

  • Text of between 1200-1500 words with at least 4 source interviews. (in English)
  • A 1-2 min video of the journalist explaining the gist of the story (in any Indian language). We will share the guidelines and help you with the video
  • 2 Photographs (optional but highly encouraged)

Compensation

  • INR 10,000 per story
  • Payment will be made within 15 days of publishing of the story.

How soon will you hear from us

You will hear from us within ten days of pitching.
